April 28, 2025, Hunts Post: St Neots school is one of first on School Allergy Register
A Huntingdonshire school is one of the first in the country to have been awarded a place on the national School Allergy Register.
Priory Park Infants School and Pre-School in St Neots was assessed and found to be meeting best practice in managing allergies, as set out by the Schools Allergy Code.
The code sets out best practice for schools to help them keep children with allergies safer and it’s recommended by the Department for Education.
It is one of 15 primary schools across the country on the list, which can be viewed online, and only the second in Cambridgeshire.
Charlotte York, deputy head teacher, said: “We’re really proud to have been awarded a place on the register and a great deal of work went into us achieving this standard.
“This included training all of our staff to support children with allergies and to recognise and treat allergic reactions, buying spare adrenaline pens for the school and running an anaphylaxis emergency response drill.”
An Allergy and Anaphylaxis Policy was also created, which can be found on the school website, a designated allergy lead was appointed and a whole-school approach was introduced to make everyone more aware of allergies.
The assessment was carried out by The Allergy Team, who also awarded the school with the Schools Allergy Register trust mark.
The Allergy Team was founded by Sarah Knight, who has two children with allergies.
She said: “To earn their place on the Schools Allergy Register, schools have to demonstrate that they are committed to following best practice in managing allergies.
“Seeing that a school is on the Schools Allergy Register gives parents and carers greater confidence that their child’s condition is understood and that procedures have been put in place to keep them safe, helping to reduce the huge anxiety many of us feel when handing over our children into someone else’s care.” . . .
