(UK) Thorpe St. Andrew: New special needs unit approved

Officers at Norfolk County Council have approved the Conservative-run council's proposals for a new teaching unit to be constructed at St Williams Primary School in Thorpe St Andrew.

The plans are for a new standalone, single-storey building to be constructed in the grounds of the Williams Loke school.

The new building would serve as a social, emotional, and mental health teaching unit for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

The council has identified an urgent need to deliver extra places to support such pupils and has been building similar units at a number of the county's schools.

A number of special schools have been built in places such as Easton and Fakenham, while new ones are to be constructed in Downham Market and Great Yarmouth.

But council officers see the specialist resource bases as a way for SEND children to be educated within mainstream school settings.

The council says such bases also reduce the need - and the cost to County Hall - of children having to travel for SEND education. . . .
