McAllen, TX: University and public schools to partner on early autism intervention

UTRGV and IDEA Public Schools are partnering to launch an early autism intervention program dedicated to researching education delivery models, impacts of accelerated learning and that will serve as a blueprint for training educators in the Valley.

The program is called Classroom IDEAL which stands for individuals dedicated to excellence, achievement and learning for children with autism spectrum disorder.

IDEA Quest Academy in Edinburg is set to debut the new program this coming school year.

Classroom IDEAL is funded with a grant of more than $1 million from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and will serve a total of 90 students in a two-year span.

Associate Professor of Human Development and School Services, Noe Ramos, is the principal investigator and is set to lead UTRGV to conduct research on the high-frequency service delivery model, studying its impact on accelerating learning, increasing desired classroom behaviors and improving long-term developmental trajectories for the participating students.

“Research consistently demonstrates that young children on the autism spectrum make the greatest gains when provided with intensive early interventions,” Ramos said in a press release. “Building on our strong history of collaborating with IDEA Public Schools on federal mental health initiatives, we knew their student-centered special education leadership team was the perfect partner to implement these critical services for Valley families, especially in a region where these intensive resources have historically been scarce.”

The program has a set of benchmarks for success such as aiming for at least 75% of students to achieve measurable improvements in key developmental areas such as communication, social functioning, adaptive behaviors, self-help and fine motor skills.

UTRGV will appoint a program director to monitor therapeutic treatment and overlook data-driven goals.

Students can expect three specialized classrooms, with a limit of 15 students. The classroom is staffed by a certified special education teacher and two paraprofessionals to deliver intensive, individualized intervention. The instructional staff is also collaborating closely with an embedded multidisciplinary team of specialists such as board certified behavior analysts, registered behavior technicians, speech language pathologists and occupational therapists.

“Early intervention can have a profound impact on a child’s development and future success,” Jill Dominguez, area superintendent of IDEA Rio Grande Valley said. “Through our partnership with UTRGV, Classroom IDEAL will provide students with autism access to specialized services in a supportive educational environment where they can thrive academically, socially and emotionally.

Classroom IDEAL is also set to serve as a blueprint for training educators in South Texas through another grant initiative named Teacher FACTT (functional communication training for teachers). The project provides professional development to 200 teachers and paraprofessionals across 11 school districts over the next two years by gaining evidence based strategies to implement in their schools.

Enrollment for the first year is available for up to 45 eligible students, aged 5 years old to 7 years old. Parents must attend a mandatory information session prior to admission.
