Oct 8, 2025, York Press: Building to start on new SEND school in Osgodby, near Selby
Construction on a long-awaited special educational needs school in North Yorkshire is set to begin.
Bowmer + Kirkland have been awarded a contract to build South View Academy in Osgodby, near Selby.
The school will offer all-through teaching for 100 children aged three to 19 with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).
It will be run by the Wellspring Academy Trust - which oversees 33 schools across North, South and East Yorkshire – and is set to offer students “holistic and socially inclusive” education.
Executive principal Shona Crichton said: “South View Academy will expand the opportunities and horizons for young people with SEND in the area through additional places, specialised support and exceptional facilities.
“The project will result in a purpose-built setting that will meet the needs of young people in their local community.”
"Significant” investment from the Department for Education has been made to the school.
It follows a unanimous decision to approve the school’s application, submitted by Bowmer + Kirkland, by members of North Yorkshire Council’s Strategic Planning Committee last year. . . .
The proposal has received widespread support from locals, with residents citing a “desperate” need for SEND facilities in the Selby area, highlighting the cases of some children as young as four who currently face a two-hour journey to get to school.
"We're delighted the build is progressing" . . .
Selby’s MP Keir Mather said he has “long-term advocate” for the project.
In response to news of the construction, he said: “When I was elected in July 2023, and again in July 2024, I made a promise to deliver this much-need school for local families. . .
