June 26, 2025, Yorkshire Live: Chilling warning as two in five Kirklees kids will be overweight by certain year
More than two in five Kirklees children will be overweight or obese in the next 10 years.
According to recent research by the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH), it is predicted that by 2035, more than 40% of children in Kirklees will be overweight or obese.
The RSPH analysed data from the Government's national child measurement programme, spanning from 2009-10 to 2023-24, to forecast the prevalence of overweight or obese year 6 children across England. Their findings revealed that in Kirklees, 37.5 per cent of Year 6 children were overweight in 2023-24, with projections indicating this will increase to 43.8 per cent by 2034-35.
Nationally, the research suggests that 90 per cent of areas will witness a rise in the number of overweight children, with 36 per cent of Year 6 students already overweight or obese in 2023-24 - a figure expected to jump to 41 per cent by 2034-35.
William Roberts, RSPH chief executive, commented: "As a nation we're failing the test on childhood obesity.
"Our projections show that we are heading in the wrong direction on obesity, with children in some of the most deprived areas set to be worst affected. . . .
Ali Oliver, chief executive of the Youth Sport Trust, highlighted the importance of supporting not only the physical but also the mental and social development of children to combat childhood obesity. She said: "We now need a new national plan which fully embraces the power of physical activity including PE, sport and play, to develop a generation of children and young people who are happy, healthy and ready to learn."
The Government has voiced its commitment to providing every child with the "best start in life", striving to raise the "healthiest generation of children in our history".
