A new centre's opened in Bradford to help children with complex special educational needs stay in school.

The Social, Communication, Interaction and Learning Centre is the first of its kind in the district.

Bradford Council says it's already helped cut permanent exclusions and boost attendance since opening.

Staff at the centre work directly with children while also helping schools develop the skills and confidence needed to better support pupils with additional needs

The centre will also act as a training hub, allowing specialists to model approaches and share expertise with education staff from across the district.

The centre is located at Margaret McMillan Primary School but serves children from across the district.

Councillor Sally Birch, Bradford Council's Executive Member for Children and Families, said:

“Every child deserves the opportunity to thrive and achieve their potential.

“The SCIL Centre will provide specialist support for children with complex needs while helping schools access the expertise they need to support pupils more effectively. By working together, we can ensure children receive the right support at the right time and help prevent unnecessary exclusions from school. . . .

“I have visited this provision myself to see first hand the dedication and professionalism of the service and how it has already started to make a difference to the lives of these children and their families. It is helping children remain engaged in education and receive the support they need to succeed.”

The facility has been developed with the support of Bradford headteachers. It is based on a successful model already operating in Worcestershire.
