MIDDLETOWN – The Kleiner Center at the former Middletown Psychiatric Center is going to be redeveloped into an educational facility for both the Middletown school district and Orange-Ulster BOCES.

The shell of a building was originally to be transformed into a community center; however, with financial aid from the state, the City of Middletown, which owns the 14-acre parcel and the 80,000 square foot building, the school district and BOCES have plans to redevelop the building as an education center, said Mayor Joseph DeStefano.

“Middletown school district is bulging at the seams and outsourcing a lot of their universal pre-k. It’s going to be used for BOCES for their special education needs classrooms availability,” he said. “That is special needs for BOCES and U-Pre-K for the Middletown school district.”

The total cost to develop the Kleiner building is between $65- and $70 million. The state has kicked in $10 million, and the mayor said they are about $9- to $10-million short, but that can be secured.
