(UK) Barnstaple: School adds "learning hub" for students with autism, complex learning needs

Oct 24, 2025, Devon Live: Barnstaple school opens new learning base for pupils with autism

A new Communication and Interaction Resource Base has opened at Pilton Community College, giving students with autism the tools to succeed in mainstream school

A new learning hub tailored for students with autism and complex communication needs has been officially opened by the Mayor of Barnstaple, offering fresh support within the mainstream school system.

The Communication and Interaction Resource Base (CAIRB) at Pilton Community College aims to create a structured, inclusive environment that allows young people with additional needs to access mainstream education. The facility was developed with the backing of Devon County Council to expand local provision for pupils requiring specialist support.

The opening ceremony was attended by students, parents, school governors, and members of staff, with Councillor Janet Coates cutting the ribbon to formally launch the centre. The event also included thanks from Grant Edwards, lead advisory teacher, who praised the team behind the project, highlighting contributions from Matt Evans, Sarah Engelking, Rachel Greenwood, Amy Richmond, and Louise Pincombe.

Sarah Engelking, a specialist teacher, said: “The positive vision of senior leadership and the excellent SENDCO and SEND team at Pilton have made this possible. The school is inclusive, encouraging and ambitious for all their pupils. The CAIRB staff and pupils do an amazing job of valuing, celebrating and integrating everyone.”

Councillor Coates added: “I am delighted to officially open such an inspiring facility at Pilton College. The development of the CAIRB demonstrates the school’s commitment to inclusion and meeting the needs of its neurodiverse community. It is clear that the staff have created an environment where all young people are supported to thrive and reach their full potential.”

The new centre is designed to assist children with autism, speech and language delays, and other communication-related challenges. As well as offering day-to-day support, it is intended to boost awareness and inclusion across the wider school.
