(UK) Yate: Special school for "complex learning needs" opening "amid increasing demand"
Turner Court School, situated on Turner Drive at Westerleigh Business Park, provides specialist education for children aged six to 11 with complex learning needs.
The school has capacity for up to 40 pupils and caters for children diagnosed with autism, as well as those with additional needs such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), speech and language difficulties, social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs and behavioural challenges.
Classes are limited to a maximum of nine pupils, allowing staff to provide individualised teaching and support.
The school has been designed to offer a therapeutic learning environment, helping children develop academically, socially and emotionally.
It has opened with a multidisciplinary team of teachers, in-house clinical specialists and pastoral support staff.
The opening comes amid increasing demand for specialist education provision in the area.
Nearby Bristol City Council identified more than 15,400 pupils attending schools in the city with special educational needs in January 2025, an increase of 5.8 per cent compared with the previous year.
Nationally, the number of pupils with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) has also reached record levels, reflecting growing demand for specialist support.
Turner Court School is part of the privately-owned Witherslack Group, which provides specialist education for children and young people with additional needs.
Castlefell School near Thornbury, which serves pupils aged eight to 16 years, is also operated by Witherslack Group, offering continuity of provision from primary into secondary education where appropriate. . . .
