MANCHESTER, N.H. —

School leaders in Rochester are urging support for a budget override as the district faces a $2 million shortfall driven by rising healthcare, transportation and special education costs.

During a city meeting this week, the chair of the school board warned the district could face major cuts if support for the schools does not exceed the tax cap.

"I want our families and staff and community members to understand the seriousness of the situation we're facing," said Matthew Pappas, Rochester School Board Ward 3 Seat B. "The current proposed reductions impact approximately 25 positions across our district after we've already eliminated 20 others from retirees and resignations."

Officials also warned that additional cuts could affect Advanced Placement classes.

Rochester City Council is scheduled to meet with the school board next week.
