(New Zealand) 2 special schools planned for "high and complex needs"

Jan 28, 2026, The Post: ‘It’s so life-changing’: First specialist schools to be built in 50 years

Queen Elizabeth College in Palmerston North will be the home of one of two new day specialist schools to support children with high and complex needs, the first built in New Zealand in 50 years.

The other school will be at Ngākōroa School in Drury, south of Auckland, and the Government is putting about $40 million [$24M U.S.] towards the two projects.

The first stage of the Palmerston North school will include four teaching spaces, therapy facilities and outdoor learning areas, and it will cater for up to 36 students from the wider region. The closest specialist school to Manawatū now was Arahunga School in Whanganui.
