Oct 18, 2025, WGNS Radio, Murfreesboro, TN: Sheriff’s Office Deepens Autism Awareness Through Immersive Training

This week, the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office took a meaningful step toward more inclusive and informed policing by completing the “Effective Policing: Autism Response” training course. It gave local deputies a hands-on learning experience that was focused on better serving individuals on the autism spectrum.

The training was designed to equip local law enforcement personnel with practical tools and insights to recognize, communicate with, and safely de-escalate situations involving autistic community members.

Through a blend of real-world scenarios, expert instruction, and collaborative discussion, participants gained a deeper understanding of how autism may present in high-stress encounters and how to respond with empathy and effectiveness.

Adding a unique and heartfelt dimension to the training was guest speaker Tanner Smith, known for his role on the Netflix series “Love on the Spectrum.” Smith shared personal stories and perspectives that helped humanize the challenges faced by autistic individuals during interactions with law enforcement. His presence underscored the importance of community voices in shaping responsive and respectful policing practices.

According to the Law Enforcement Innovation Center, the goal of the program is to strengthen departments’ ability to serve all citizens with dignity and care.

The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office continues to prioritize community engagement and professional development, and this training marks a significant milestone in their commitment to inclusive service. As Murfreesboro grows and diversifies, efforts like these help ensure that every resident feels seen, understood, and protected.
