A call has been issued for funding to be made available to secure the future of the vital Sligo–Leitrim Autism Support Service as the waiting list for the service grows.

A motion tabled by Cllr James Gilmartin was passed unanimously by Leitrim County Council calling on the Minister for Children, Disability and Equality, Norma Foley TD, to provide recurrent funding to place the Sligo–Leitrim Autism Support Service on a permanent footing.

The motion requests that the Council formally write to Minister Foley seeking sustained funding for at least two Autism Support Officers to ensure continuity of this vital service beyond the conclusion of its current pilot phase, which is due to end this March.

The Sligo–Leitrim Autism Support Service supports autistic young people at critical educational transition points, particularly from second to third year in post-primary school and from Leaving Certificate to further education, training or employment.

An independent evaluation of the pilot programme has demonstrated very positive outcomes for participating young people and their families.

Despite operating on a pilot basis, the service continues to receive referrals and currently has a waiting list, clearly evidencing strong demand and the need for long-term investment.

Speaking following the unanimous vote, Cllr James Gilmartin sad the service is making a real and measurable difference in the lives of autistic young people at some of the most important transition stages in their education and early careers.

“The independent evaluation confirms its success, and the continued referrals and waiting list show the clear demand for this support.

“We cannot allow a proven and effective service to simply end because pilot funding has run its course. Sustained, recurrent funding is essential to secure at least two Autism Support Officers and place the service on a permanent footing,” said Cllr Gilmartin.

Cllr Gilmartin welcomed the cross-party support for the motion, stating that the unanimous decision sends a strong and united message to Government about the importance of protecting and strengthening supports for autistic young people and their families in the Sligo–Leitrim region.

In accordance with the adopted resolution, Leitrim County Council will now formally write to Minister Foley outlining the Council’s position and seeking urgent confirmation of recurrent funding to ensure continuity of the service.
