Mar 22, 2024, Midlands103: 18 Children In Midlands Town With No Place In Autism Class
There are 18 children in a midlands town in need of a special class place, but nowhere for them to go.
Those are the words of Athlone's Hilda Duignan, whose five-year son is one of those in need of an Autism class.
She's placing her hopes on her son joining her daughter in a school in Ballinasloe, but says she's unsure of the availability.
Ms. Duignan says if that doesn't work out, there's no Plan B.
A Senator says it's "unacceptable" there are 18 children in a midlands town still waiting to find a special class space for the upcoming school year.
Longford Senator and Chairperson of the Oireachtas Autism Committee Micheál Carrigy says there's more work to be done from the Government.
Audio: There are no schools with capacity nearby. From my own experience, and the panic and the upset and the frustration that I feel and my husband feels here in our home because of it. I can imagine that there are similar feelings in houses around the town and indeed around the country.\
