***(UK) Leics: 252 place/100 staff special school approved; 'great and ever-growing need'
Plans for a new £30 million [$40M] special school in Husbands Bosworth have been approved.
Leicestershire County Council has been granted planning permission to build the 252-place school on land off Kilworth Road.
It will cater for pupils aged four to 19 with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
The two-storey development is expected to employ around 100 members of staff, with the council aiming to complete construction and open the school in 2028. . . .
Councillor Charles Pugsley, the county council’s cabinet member for children and families, welcomed the approval.
He said: “There is a great and ever-growing need for specialist school places in Leicestershire.”
He added that a purpose-built school in the area where it is most needed was “a great start” towards improving access to specialist support in Harborough.
The council says the development is also expected to reduce its reliance on independent SEND providers and help meet demand for specialist places in the longer term.
The Husbands Bosworth site was identified as the best location to serve the Harborough area, helping to reduce travel distances for pupils and their families.
