(Ireland) Cork: Waterpark to hold "autism friendly sessions"

July 23, 2025, CorkBeo: New autism-friendly sessions at Cork's biggest waterpark

It can be hard to plan summer days out with the kids at the best of times - but a Roscarbery activity centre is making things easier for everyone with their inclusive autism-friendly floating waterpark sessions - with fewer crowds and no background noise.

A recent HSE report found that 1 in 65 Irish people are on the autism spectrum - and awareness about it is growing - which means that demand for more inclusive options for activities is also going up. And for many autistic children and young people, a day out can be overwhelming due to crowded spaces, loud music and unpredictable schedules.

But the new sessions at the Lagoon Activity Centre will give these kids the chance to enjoy the same fun activities as everyone else in a safe environment - they can go on slides, a trampoline and a climbing wall that all float on the waterpark's lagoon.

Each session will include:

Reduced participant numbers to avoid noise and crowds.

No background music to create a low-sensory environment.

Time buffers to ensure no interaction with standard bookings.

Trained staff and lifeguards who are briefed to provide clear guidance and a supportive presence.

A moderate swimming ability is required for all visitors to the waterpark, as the depth of the lagoon ranges from 3 to 16 feet. And while each session is supervised by lifeguards who are trained to work with autistic children, all under-12s must be accompanied by a participating parent or guardian. Tickets are €19, and you can book a spot at one of the quieter sessions here.

Owners of the Lagoon Activity Centre have advised visitors to bring swimwear, a towel and socks, which must be worn when doing activities on the water. You can bring your wetsuit or use one provided by the centre, and it's a good idea to bring a snack and water too.
