As lawmakers in Madison feud over the state budget and the U.S. Education Department fights to come back from the dead, Wisconsin school districts are watching with bated breath. Those decisions, made at the state and national level, will decide if they have to cut staff, end programs and plan for the future.


Schools have been in budget-cutting mode since the amount of money they can bring in was limited in the 1990s; after over 30 years, administrators say, they’ve cut as much as they can from their budgets. Several area districts are facing million-dollar deficits as inflation drives costs up, special education costs rise and school populations decline with birth rates. . . .
