Mar 19, 2025, Dickson (TN) Post: Dickson County School Board approves use of therapy dog in Special Education Department
Dickson County students in the Special Education Department are welcoming a new furry friend to their learning experience. The Dickson County School Board unanimously approved the use of Mia Murphy, a female Labrador Retriever dog, to be used in the Special Education Department.
According to Dickson County Director of Schools Dr. Christie Southerland, Stuart-Burns Elementary School currently utilizes the services of another therapy dog named Stuart, making Mia the second therapy dog in the school district. . . .
Dr. Southerland said, “Our goal with Mia is to have a therapy dog that will offer students and staff emotional and mental health support, and promote a positive school environment.
There are many benefits to therapy dogs in the school and classrooms.
“According to the Alliance of Therapy Dogs, some benefits include: Physical, Social, Cognitive, Emotional and Mental health benefits. We are excited about our new friends and look forward to working with them in supporting our students and faculty,” Southerland noted.
