Schools are failing to spell out how they spend the $1.5 billion a year in taxpayer funding earmarked for students with disabilities ranging from autism to dyslexia and cerebral palsy, the NSW Legislative Council’s education committee said. Its inquiry exposed shocking cases of students who were beaten, medicated or locked in cupboards in NSW government schools — including a young autistic girl whose teacher hit her over the head with a stick. An investigation by The Daily Telegraph reveals some schools are claiming more than $1 million a year in disability payments. Schools receive extra funding on behalf of each student with a disability but the money is pooled for principals to spend as they see fit. The Public Service Association of NSW, which represents teacher aides, told the inquiry that money is “increasingly being diverted from the student who qualified for the support, to assisting other students or other tasks”. …
