Dec 30, 2025, Augusta Chronicle: Augusta school for students with special needs reveals plan to expand
An Augusta school that enrolls pupils with learning and health challenges is proposing a larger campus to accommodate hundreds more students from pre-elementary to high-school ages.
Apparo Academy opened in 2019 at 3104 Skinner Mill Road, combining educational and therapeutic environments to better prepare children in their first school-age years to advance to more conventional schools. The campus occupies 1.24 acres.
Now, the school is asking the city of Augusta to rezone slightly more than 5 acres of land next to Apparo for a multi-building expansion that school founder and executive director Jennifer Jones said would help serve about 400 more children annually.
"As the demand for therapeutic and specialized educational services has increased significantly in our community, our current facility is at capacity, and we maintain a growing waiting list of families seeking placement," Jones said in a Nov. 19 letter to Augusta planning officials. "The proposed project will allow us to expand essential services that directly impact children's developmental outcomes, long-term independence, and ability to thrive in inclusive environments." . . .
