May 27, 2025, EuroNews, Albania: Rise in Children’s Heart Problems Linked to Energy Drinks, Doctors Warn
Pediatric cardiologists are sounding the alarm over a growing number of children suffering from heart issues due to the consumption of energy drinks.
In an interview with Euronews Albania, Dr. Numila Kuneshka, head of Pediatric Cardiology at the “Mother Teresa” University Hospital Center, reported a notable increase in cases. Not only are consultations on the rise, but hospitalizations are also being recorded.
“We’re seeing more cases and at younger ages. Children as young as 9–10 years old are consuming these drinks, and we already have hospitalized patients due to the damage they cause,” Dr. Kuneshka stated.
She emphasized that energy drinks are strictly unsuitable for children and adolescents, citing their numerous and serious health risks:
High caffeine content — often more than coffee — leading to anxiety, sleep disorders, and irritability
Excessive sugar — increasing the risk of obesity, tooth decay, and type 2 diabetes
Cardiovascular and neurological issues — including tachycardia (rapid heartbeat), chest pain, and, in some cases, even epileptic seizures
“These health impacts begin in childhood and can leave lifelong consequences,” she warned. . . .
Dr. Kuneshka urged parents to take the issue seriously:“Talk to your children and raise their awareness about the harmful effects of energy drinks on their health.”
