Residents in the York Suburban School District could soon see a 4.4% tax hike as elected board members advance a budget proposal to address rising health care, special education and transportation costs.

No one likes paying taxes, Board Vice president Richard Robinson said at the Apr. 20 meeting, but he's glad to pay them.

“Because at least I know how the money is being spent,” he said, “and I think it’s being spent damn well.

The board voted 9-0 to temporarily adopt next year’s $81.6 million budget with plans to adopt a final budget on May 26. The budget is due to the state by the end of June.

The district projected to bring in $78 million in revenue for the next budget, which left a $2.7 million deficit. To cover this, the officials plan a 4.4% tax increase and use $1.87 million out of the fund balance.

This means a house valued at $165,000 will pay an additional $199.27 with the increase, according to the district officials.
