July 18, 2018, Wilmington (NC) Star News: New Hanover unveils middle school redistricting plan http://www.starnewsonline.com/news/20180718/new-hanover-unveils-middle-school-redistricting-plan The New Hanover County Board of Education is considering a redistricting plan that would move nearly 550 middle schoolers. … In March, the board voted to move students within the old Virgo Preparatory Academy district to Williston Middle School. Virgo, which held its first day of class Wednesday, is now operated by the University of North Carolina Wilmington as a laboratory school. But the middle school redistricting plan would move those students to Holly Shelter, something district leaders recommended back in March. Superintendent Tim Markley said he recommended the change because putting all of the former Virgo students into Williston gave the school a disproportionately high number of low-income students. It also meant that Williston’s student body included roughly 25 percent special education students.
