May 22, 2019, Wilkes-Barre, PA, Citizen’s Voice: (Letter to the editor) Special education funding lagging https://www.citizensvoice.com/opinion/special-education-funding-lagging-1.2485579 Editor: As a Crestwood School District taxpayer and current administrator at IU 29 in Schuylkill County, I couldn’t agree more with recent stories on the state’s funding for special education lagging behind district needs (April 28). Special education costs continue to rise despite decreased funding. As public school funding continues to decline with its obligations, the burden falls on local taxpayers to make up the difference in the form of increased school taxes. Years of underinvestment by the state has left schools $3 billion short in basic education and $1.38 billion short in special education. Citizens should support Gov. Tom Wolf’s proposed $200 million more in basic education funding driven out through the fair school funding formula, $50 million more in special education funding for children with disabilities and $10 million more targeted to career and technical education classrooms. Childhood Lost
Children today are noticeably different from previous generations, and the proof is in the news coverage we see every day. This site shows you what’s happening in schools around the world. Children are increasingly disabled and chronically ill, and the education system has to accommodate them. Things we've long associated with autism, like sensory issues, repetitive behaviors, anxiety and lack of social skills, are now problems affecting mainstream students. Blame is predictably placed on bad parenting (otherwise known as trauma from home).
Addressing mental health needs is as important as academics for modern educators. This is an unrecognized disaster. The stories here are about children who can’t learn or behave like children have always been expected to. What childhood has become is a chilling portent for the future of mankind.
