Wichita Falls, TX: Elem school adds sensory room to meet "growing need"

Kate Burgess Elementary has officially completed its new sensory room, a dedicated space designed to help students reset, refocus, and succeed during the school day.

The project was driven by the efforts of teacher Tina Bearden, who recognized a growing need among her students and worked to turn that vision into reality. What began as a small attempt to support students with sensory tiles in her classroom eventually grew into a fully developed room tailored to a wide range of student needs.

Inside the sensory room, students are not simply playing; they are learning how to regulate their emotions and regain focus. The space allows them to step away from the classroom environment when needed, providing tools and activities that help them slow down and reset before returning to their studies.

“There are just so many needs and sensory issues that the kids deal with on a daily basis,” Bearden said. “And it’s not just special education; it is every child.”

Bearden explained that the room was carefully designed to address a variety of sensory needs. The process took time, but she credits strong support from school leadership for helping bring the project to completion. . . .

Staff say sensory rooms like this are becoming increasingly important in today’s schools. For educators interested in creating similar spaces, Bearden advises patience and thoughtful planning to ensure the room meets the unique needs of their students.
