Wheeling, WV: Learning center becomes "licensed behavioral health provider"

Sept 29, 2025, WTRF, Wheeling, WV: From learning center to behavioral services: Augusta Levy marks 20 years

The Augusta Levy Learning Center marked its 20th anniversary with major changes, including a new name, new services, and recognition as a licensed behavioral health provider.

The organization will now operate as Augusta Levy Behavioral Services. Leaders also unveiled a new logo to reflect the group’s growth.

Executive Director Angie Wood shared the announcement during a community event that brought together families, board members, staff, and supporters.

“Eighteen years ago, I started here as a college intern,” Wood said. “Today, we celebrate how far we’ve come and look ahead as Augusta Levy Behavioral Services, offering broader care for individuals and families across the region.”

The celebration also honored founder Kathy Shapell, who received the first Champion of Children Award. Wood credited Shapell’s vision and dedication with laying the foundation for the center’s work in autism services. The board of directors—Arch Riley Jr. (president), Shane Walters, Mary Laska, and Dr. Jodi Lindsey—were also recognized for their leadership.

The event highlighted several milestones reached this year, including recognition by the state as a Licensed Behavioral Health Center. This designation allows the organization to expand services and begin accepting Children with Serious Emotional Disorder (CSED) Waivers in October. Other developments include a new Early Learner’s Program for young children, an expanded adult program, tuition reimbursement for employees pursuing Applied Behavior Analysis certification, staff growth to 70 members, and the unveiling of a new logo.

The evening program was hosted by longtime supporters Lisa and Barry Allen, who have backed Augusta Levy since its early days
