Wautoma, WI: "There seem to be more students with behavioral health issues"

Bena stated there generally hadn’t been any issues where the school had to use either one until recently as there seem to be more students with behavioral health issues. Bena explained to the board the difference between restraint and seclusion, with restraint more about prohibiting movement, while seclusion means the child loses the right to free movement within the classroom or area where the incident began and is moved to a safer area. She also informed the board the school reported four seclusions and eight restraints throughout the previous school year. According to Bena, the school has a trained crisis team made up of numerous staff members throughout the school who have attended the training courses and have obtained the necessary certification through CESA 5. Staff members must be re-certified every three years.
