Nov 7, 2019, Berkshire Live: Plans revealed for second special needs school in Wokingham https://www.getreading.co.uk/news/reading-berkshire-news/plans-revealed-second-special-needs-17212608 Wokingham could be getting another school for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). The borough is already home to the 'outstanding' rated Addington school in Woodley, but education bosses have revealed they want to open another in the area. It currently costs Wokingham Borough Council more than £2 [$2.6M U.S.] million a year to transport SEND children to school, at an approximate cost of £6,500 [$8.3K] per head. Children’s services leaders say the authority has seen an increase in the number of children and young people with an educational health and care plan attending a special school, and in particular schools outside the borough…. He said: “We need another special needs school and that’s going through the pipeline at the moment…. “If the numbers justify it, the school will be delivered.”
Childhood Lost
Children today are noticeably different from previous generations, and the proof is in the news coverage we see every day. This site shows you what’s happening in schools around the world. Children are increasingly disabled and chronically ill, and the education system has to accommodate them. Things we've long associated with autism, like sensory issues, repetitive behaviors, anxiety and lack of social skills, are now problems affecting mainstream students. Blame is predictably placed on bad parenting (otherwise known as trauma from home).
Addressing mental health needs is as important as academics for modern educators. This is an unrecognized disaster. The stories here are about children who can’t learn or behave like children have always been expected to. What childhood has become is a chilling portent for the future of mankind.
