Funding has been sought for two new special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) schools in the borough as demand for spaces increases.

Wokingham Borough Council’s decision making executive submitted the application as a growing number of SEND children are having to spend additional time travelling to schools outside of the borough due to limited spaces.

Executive member for children’s services, Cllr Prue Bray, said it is a “priority” to ensure children have “local access to high quality services”.

Around 1,500 children in the borough had an educational, health and care plan (EHCP) in January this year, equating to 2.5 per cent of the school aged population, with projections that this could rise by 60 per cent to 2,400 by 2025.

Currently, the borough has two SEND schools, Addington in Woodley and Chiltern Way Academy in Wokingham, with Oak Tree in Winnersh due to open September 2023. …
