NW England A dedicated special needs free school with sports facilities, animal enclosure and sensory garden looks set to be built in Widnes, despite a petition objecting to the scheme. The LDRS reported in January how Congleton-based Youth Engagement School (YES) Trust had submitted proposals for a two-storey special education needs and disability (SEND) school on Naylor Road, which it would run on behalf of the Department for Education (DfE).
Branded the Raise Academy, it would have capacity for up to 64 pupils but the will initially open for 50 – all between the ages of 11 to 16 – and provide education for children in both Halton and St Helens. …
A report to the committee said there had been representations from 29 people, with 16 objections 14 supportive. Objections included traffic safety and impact on the local character of the area. A petition of 159 signatures has also been received, objecting to the loss of green space for community use, increased traffic and congestion and children’s welfare….
