(UK) Wales: New $51M special school 'largest ever'

Jan 22, 2024, Insider Media: Next step towards new £40m [$51M] special school

Wales

Swansea's cabinet has taken the next step in a process to aimed at building a new special school.
The council said the investment, expected to be in excess of £40m, would be the "largest ever" in special needs education in Swansea.

Cabinet resolved that a statutory notice be published on proposals to amalgamate Ysgol Pen-y-Bryn and Ysgol Crug Glas into one special school in September 2025 on existing sites, and relocate to a new purpose-built facility while increasing capacity from April 2028 be approved.

Ysgol Crug Glas in Dyfatty has 55 places for pupils with profound and multiple learning difficulties and Ysgol Pen-y-Bryn in Morriston has 195 spots for children with moderate to severe learning difficulties and for students with severe autism.

Swansea's two current special schools both run at maximum capacity and have some buildings that date back to the 1960s which are not seen as suitable for future needs.

Proposed is a new school to replace these on land adjacent to the existing Ysgol Pen-y-Bryn site on Mynydd Garnllwyd Road, rather than use the site for housing.

The school would have an additional 100 places….

Cabinet will consider objections, if there are any, at a future meeting.

The school, under the proposals, would be jointly funded by Swansea Council and Welsh Government via the Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme.
