(UK) W. Sussex: Council to create MORE SPED places; 'significant growth' in special needs students

Sept 22, 2025, Argus: West Sussex: County council seeks feedback on SEND plans

SE England

West Sussex County Council is seeking feedback on plans to create more school places for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

The council hopes to establish a new specialist support centre (SSC) at Buckingham Park School in Shoreham and increase the number of places at Palatine Primary School by utilising the old Lyndhurst Infant School site in Worthing.

Councillor Jacquie Russell, cabinet member for children, young people, and learning, said: "In West Sussex, there has been a significant growth in the number of children and young people with additional or specialist educational support needs.

"We have identified these opportunities in the Adur and Worthing area to create additional places for children with SEND to enable pupils to attend school locally.  . . .

The proposals for Buckingham Park School aim to adapt surplus space to accommodate 12 pupils aged 4 to 11 with social communication differences.

The creation of an SSC in the Adur area is a priority in the county council’s SEND Improvement Plan.

The informal proposal is to use the former Lyndhurst Infant School in Worthing as a satellite site for Palatine Primary School.

This could provide space for up to 75 SEND pupils, increasing the school’s planned place numbers to 262.

Reducing the number of pupils at the main school site in Goringa would allow resources to be more effectively distributed and would remove the need for the current temporary classroom. . . .
