chool teachers have taken leave in the past three years after being physically assaulted by students, new figures show.
In most cases the education department said the teachers were injured by children with special needs and the majority of incidents occurred at special schools. Non-deliberate behavioural issues were the main cause, while injuries suffered as a result of accidental physical contact were also identified.
Data released under freedom of information legislation show that 1,088 days’ leave of absence were granted in the 2018-19, 19-20 and 20-21 school years. Most teachers took one to 15 days’ paid leave but two cases made up almost a third of all absences, with one teacher granted the maximum 183 days off and another requiring 142 days…
