(UK) S Yorks: Private health group assessing kids for ADHD/ASD; NHS wait time 4 to 5 yrs

Jan 14, 2026, Rayo: More children 'as young as 6' starting to get assessed for ADHD & autism in South Yorkshire

A private ADHD & Autism clinic in South Yorkshire tell us they're seeing children 'as young as 6' come forward to get assessed.

The Montrose Health Group in Sheffield say they've been dealing with a rise in demand over the past 12 months.

Jonathan Edgeley - who runs it - is pleased to see more parents bringing their children in to get diagnosed:

"Although we have got a keen focus on helping people in Sheffield and South Yorkshire - we've had people come from all over the country because they're just not prepared to wait any longer.

"ADHD isn't just some quirky superpower with a few downsides: it's a neurodevelopmental condition with real functional costs.

"Undiagnosed ADHD brings high risk of secondary problems such as anxiety and depression; substance misuse; relationship breakdowns; and academic & career underachievement - despite having high capabilities."

Stuart Green is the Director of Operations at the Montrose Health Group:

"We're seeing people as young as six coming forwards for a diagnosis.

"Interestingly, we're seeing that ADHD often runs in families, so parents are starting to question whether they've got ADHD more now.

"So, we're offering multiple talking support sessions, as well as prescribing interventions."

The average waiting time in Sheffield currently for an ADHD or Autism diagnosis on the NHS is between 4 & 5 years.
