(UK) Rugeley: $38M for special school for 180; "existing schools operating over capacity"

Staffordshire County Council has committed £28.5 million [$38M] to create new educational facilities for children with special educational needs and disabilities.

In Rugeley, a former secondary school site will be repurposed into an all-age educational facility, providing 180 additional places and primary and secondary education for children with special needs.

Additionally, a new pupil referral unit in Stafford is planned for children permanently excluded from primary school, aiming to support their reintegration into mainstream education.

This allocation, approved on 15th July by the county's cabinet, utilises funds from the High Needs Provision Capital Allocations (HNPCA).

Councillor Janet Higgins pointed out the rising demand for special education and alternative provision, noting existing schools are operating over capacity.

She said, "Demand for special school places and alternative provision continues to rise... Without further local provision, more children are likely to require placements further from home, including independent or out-of-county settings."

The new facilities support Staffordshire's SEND reform plan, offering continuity and reducing travel time for students, while providing much-needed local support.
