A new head of children's services has been appointed by an authority criticised by Ofsted over its provision for children with disabilities and special educational needs (SEND).

Inspectors recently found Oxfordshire County Council was not meeting the needs of children requiring its help.

Lisa Lyons, the new director of children's services, said everyone was "working hard" to turn things around.

She begins her new role at the council in February.

Ms Lyons, who is currently director of children and family services at Stoke-on-Trent City Council, said she was "truly privileged" to take up the post in Oxfordshire….

"They recognise that we have improvements to make for children and young people with SEND, and everyone is working hard, developing a plan that will deliver the necessary changes."

'Absolute priority'

John Howson, cabinet member for children, education and young people's services, said under Ms Lyons the Stoke-on-Trent service had received good results "across the board" from Ofsted.

He said: "Work on our improvement journey for children and young people with SEND continues and is an absolute priority….
