New Department of Health statistics show Northern Ireland has the highest rate of autism in the UK, with 9,768 children aged four to 15 diagnosed in 2018-19 - double the number identified (4,986) in 2012-13. But Autism NI CEO Kerry Boyd said parents are waiting up to 18 months in some Trusts for assessments and that public support services are “few and far between” leaving help the charity provides “stretched to full capacity”. … Ms Boyd added: “These latest figures although alarming, are not unexpected." She said “autism is not getting the right level of attention that is so badly needed” and wants every child to be diagnosed as early as possible and “receive a tailored early intervention package to ensure the best outcomes” for them. …
