(UK) NE Lincolnshire: 150 place special school being planned

Mar 23, 2023, Grimsby Telegraph: New special educational needs school with 150 places coming to North East Lincolnshire https://www.grimsbytelegraph.co.uk/news/grimsby-news/new-special-educational-needs-school-8268300

Children with special educational needs could attend a new school with room for 150 pupils in North East Lincolnshire instead of having to travel.

Plans for the school were submitted last year by North East Lincolnshire Council to the Government's £2.6bn [$3.2B] Special Free School Revenue Fund. Now, they have officially been selected by the Department for Education to progress to the next stage which includes picking a site where it can be built.

If the plans proceed to the following stages of the application process, 150 more children aged between eight and 19 who have difficulties with their social, emotional and mental health and have special educational needs could find a place at the new school.

Places at specialist schools for children with special educational needs are usually paid by the local authority. Currently, NELC spends around £4.5m [$5.5M] each year on education fees outside of mainstream schools.

Children and education portfolio holder at North East Lincolnshire Council, Councillor Margaret Cracknell, said she is "delighted" that the Government has approved the bid.
