Plans for West Berkshire Council to fund a 25-place autism base at John O’Gaunt School in Hungerford will be decided next week.

The estimated price tag is approximately £4.45m [$6M].

The SRP is a national programme established to address school buildings in the poorest condition and to provide pupils and staff with modern, safe, efficient and sustainable learning environments.

John O’Gaunt School has been accepted into the programme, meaning that the school buildings will be rebuilt through DfE funded and delivery arrangements.

The proposed specialist provision is to address the shortage of local specialist secondary autism places and reduce the reliance on costly out-of-area placements, by creating additional SEND capacity within West Berkshire. . . .

The base would provide dedicated accommodation and support for pupils with additional needs, while enabling them to access mainstream curriculum, facilities and wider school life where appropriate. . . .
