(UK) Hull: Sports stadium opens "sensory room"

Hull FC's brand-new sensory room at the MKM Stadium is the latest inclusive initiative by the club, and it's been getting rave reviews from supporters.

Located in the South Stand, the sensory room is a specially designed space for those with sensory needs to attend a match, offering a full, unrestricted view of the pitch behind soundproof glass and creating a quiet, safe, and controlled environment to watch the game.

After being used for the first time during the Wigan match back in May and again for games against St Helens and Catalans, Hull FC fan Georgia Peel recently experienced the sensory room with her twin daughters, Nylah and Kiara, allowing the girls to take in their first-ever Hull FC match and Georgia her first in over three years.

"The day I've forever dreamed of finally came true thanks to the sensory room at the stadium," Georgia said. "I took my girls to their first-ever game and my first game since 2019.

"My twins are three years old and have autism, so sitting still on a chair in a busy stadium for over an hour was never going to happen. Instead, they had their own space where they could play with sensory toys in between watching the game.

"Nylah was calling all the players 'zebras' because of the black and white shirts. They even got a lovely cuddle with Erdy Bod at the end of the game. I'd 100% recommend it to anybody who feels they or their children would need it due to sensory issues or disabilities. Thank you to Hull FC for being inclusive."

The Black and Whites are proudly one of Super League's most inclusive clubs, running teams in every discipline of the game, including their successive Wheelchair Rugby League programme, which has been going strong for over ten years.

The Community Foundation also undertakes dozens and dozens of projects every year and impacts the lives of thousands of people while ensuring they are catering to all of their supporters' needs on club match-days.

Hull FC Head of Community Foundation James Price said: "The MKM Stadium Sensory Room on Hull FC match days is not a new concept. There has been one in place for a few years now. But we have made it far more interactive in 2023 by moving it so people can watch the live action from a room protected by soundproof glass….

"Ultimately, the sensory room gives people with sensory processing difficulties an opportunity to come to a game. Rugby League is celebrated as an inclusive sport, and we want to be able to demonstrate that at Hull FC because we feel that everybody and anybody should be able to come and watch a match."

The sensory room is available to book at Hull FC's remaining Super League home games against Castleford, Wakefield, Warrington, Leeds, and Huddersfield.

The club also run Sensory Sessions ever Monday morning for people with special needs, taking place at Edinburgh Street Community Centre.
