A specialist school for children who cannot be in mainstream schools is to be created in a vacant office block in Huddersfield.
Pivot Academy has been given the green light to convert a three-storey office at Bradley business park into a new centre for children with more demanding emotional, social and mental health needs.
The 50 places will be filled by pupils who have formal care, education or health plans through social services.
Many will have been excluded from school or mainstream school will have been deemed to not be the best environment for them to thrive.
The school also specialises in teaching children who are on the autism spectrum, have suffered a trauma or have mental health conditions.
Michael Smith, CEO of Pivot Group, said: “There is a growing need for high-quality teaching and support for children with complex needs, and we are very happy to work with Kirklees Council as they strive to support local children within Kirklees.
"Even before the pandemic the number of children with education, health and care plans was increasing by 10% year on year, growing to more than 430,000 in England by January 2021….
"At Pivot we believe children deserve better – better support, better education, and better futures, and we are committed to doing everything we can to offer all children equal opportunities and choices for life, regardless of their background or the challenges they may face.”
