'Kabir loves his brother and family, and now I see him becoming aggressive and scratching and hurting us'
A mother is losing hope trying to get her autistic and non-verbal son a placement at a special school in Gloucestershire. The mother has said, due to him not having stability within an educational setting has led to him becoming aggressive, angry and unsettled in his day to day life.
The family relocated to the county three months ago due to work. The mother knew this would be a big move for her children, especially her son who has additional needs. She contacted Gloucestershire County Council six months before the move so her special needs child would hopefully have a smooth transition into a new special school primary setting.
Yet despite the mother’s attempts to keep the Special Educational Needs team at the council in the loop with regards to her son’s needs, he is still without a school three months after arriving in the county.
Shivani Khanna, 42, moved to Brockworth with her husband and two boys late last year. Her six-year-old son has an Educational Health Care Plan (EHCP) which was put into place following his autism diagnosis.
Mrs Khanna said: “Kabir was diagnosed with autism when he was two and a half years old and was attending a special school since reception class age.
“I called Gloucestershire County Council six months ahead of the move and they said it was too soon and to call back nearer the time. I did and called them a few weeks before we moved.
“When the council did get in touch, I had a letter to say they do not give secondary school placements which did not reassure me of how they run things straight away as he is only six-years-old and does not need a secondary school.”
As Kabir has not been allocated a school placement, Mrs Bhandari says she has noticed a big change in his behaviour….
Gloucestershire County Council says it has been in regular contact with Mrs Bhandair. A spokesperson for then authority said: “While we are unable to comment on the specifics of the case, we have been in regular contact with the family to discuss their situation.
