July 12, 2018, Crewe Chronicle: Cheshire East gives go-ahead for Crewe school expansion https://www.crewechronicle.co.uk/news/cheshire-east-gives-go-ahead-14898575 A Crewe school for children with special needs has been given the go-ahead for a £1m [$1.3M US] expansion so it can take another 24 pupils. Cheshire East’s cabinet has backed proposals for Springfield Special School to increase its pupil numbers after a local authority report identified a significant need for the council to increase its specialist educational provision in the borough. Cllr Jos Saunders (Con), cabinet member for children and families, told Tuesday’s meeting of the cabinet this was a good news story…. “The recommendation is to increase the places from 132 to 156. What we’re hoping, over a three year period is we’ll end up increasing the places in total across Cheshire East by 270. "The reason for that is, at the moment, many of our children travel outside the borough to access education and the average journey is about one hour, which is far too long.”… Cllr Saunders added: “The extra places will potentially offer savings of £441,000 per year.” [$580K US]
