(UK) Cheshire: "All education staff" to receive "SEND, inclusion" training

Jan 24, 2026, Guardian: Teacher training boost to help SEND pupils in Mid Cheshire

The Government’s latest investment in SEND training follows conversations with parents and schools in Mid Cheshire, gathered during roundtables hosted by Andrew Cooper across Winsford, Northwich, and Middlewich last year.

Mr Cooper, MP for Mid Cheshire, said: "SEND is an issue of massive importance for families across Winsford, Middlewich and Northwich, I know that from constant dialogue with schools and parents, through visits, roundtables, casework, and surgery appointments.

"There is consensus that the system needs to change."

Backed by a national fund of £200 million [$273M], the new training scheme will give teaching staff a deeper understanding of how to adapt lessons for children with a variety of needs, including visual impairments and speech and language challenges.

The courses will introduce teachers to assistive technology such as speech-to-text tools and help promote a wider awareness of different learning needs in every classroom.

The training is underpinned by updated guidance in the SEND Code of Practice, which now states that all education staff - from nurseries through to colleges - should receive training on SEND and inclusion.

Mr Cooper added: "By creating specialist places and equipping teachers, the Government is making sure need is identified earlier, help comes more quickly, and parents don’t have to fight tooth and nail for the support they deserve." . . .
