What will happen in another 4 years? How can we go on like this? This is a national (and international) problem of monumental proportions. We have an entire new class of children who cannot be accommodated by the system: many are manifestly neurologically impaired. Meanwhile, the government and the medical profession sleep on regardless.

At a special ceremony, students and staff had a chance to make their mark on the building steels that form part of the new two-storey extension before these were put into place.

Freddy, who has been at the school since it opened nearly eight years ago, said: "I was here at the beginning and now the school is getting bigger."

SXYC7QThe new extension will provide 50 extra school places for children and young people aged two to 19 with special educational needs and disabilities.

Highfield Littleport Academy's headteacher, Yvonne Skillern, said: "We are all getting excited about the much-needed expansion to our school for our young people.

"It will provide excellent opportunities to prepare our children for adulthood."
