(UK) Bury: 80 place autism school opens

Dec 20, 2024, Bury Times: New school for children with autism welcomed by Bury MPs

N. England

Borough MPs James Frith and Christian Wakeford visited the newly constructed Brookhaven School in Unsworth last week.

The special school offers 80 placements for children aged 11 to 16 with autism and/or speech, language, and communication difficulties.

Children can attend the school if it is named by a local authority in their education health and care plan (EHCP). . . ..

Mr Wakeford said: "Listening to the experiences from parents of SEN children has been difficult, in some mainstream schools their experiences have been challenging at best, degrading at worst.

"It has been one area I’ve become far too familiar with for the wrong reasons.

"In contrast, I was delighted with the visit to Brookhaven, to see the facilities on offer and I feel confident with the staff bringing the school online, it is really going to offer support for those children who need it." . . .

"It was great to see firsthand the team putting into action their vision to prepare pupils for happy, successful lives by developing their talents and raising aspirations. . . .
