A former guest house in Bournemouth will be transformed into a school for children with special educational needs.

The Connie Rothman Learning Trust has won planning permission to convert Southbourne Grove House at 96 Southbourne Road into a specialist school for up to 45 secondary school and sixth-form students. . . .

Supporters welcomed the plans as an essential resource that would provide much-needed local specialist education and bring a struggling building back into positive community use.

Council planning officers reported that while the change of use results in the loss of tourist accommodation, the business had struggled financially and had not operated as a viable guest house for some time.

The council’s children’s services department confirmed that secondary and post-16 places represent an area of sustained pressure within the conurbation. . . .
