A new sensory garden designed to help students with autism regulate their emotions and wellbeing has officially opened at a school in Billericay.

Mayflower High School was awarded £11,500 [$15,000] from Essex County Council for the project as part of its Best Practice Sensory Spaces programme. . . .

One of the school's SEND ambassadors, Year 11 student Destiny, said: “We live in a world that is louder, faster and more demanding for autistic people.

“Every day, our minds and senses are bombarded by the flashing lights and the relentless hum of different sounds such as traffic.

“Our sensory garden has been created for the use of students to provide a safe space where they can self-regulate in a calming area.”

The space was officially opened this week with staff, students and representatives from Essex County Council attending a ceremony.

SENDCo Carla Thorogood said the garden would provide pupils with a range of opportunities to support self-regulation and wellbeing. . . .

“These students now have the opportunity to take timeout in the garden. . . .
