A NEW special needs school which doubles as a community centre is being proposed as part of a major plan.
The proposals for a new Basildon school will be unveiled at a launch event set to take place on April 23.
Developer Tony Aldridge said he has been in talks with Basildon Council alongside a special educational needs foundation and a wellbeing services provider.
His goal is to build a facility which can help children who struggle with mainstream school, as well as supporting the wider community.
He has launched “Future Basildon”, a website which details how the work being done will benefit the town and educate people on the local plan – something he feels people are not aware of.
He said: “I have been working closely with the local council, Omnia Foundation and Feelgood Fitness to help bring forward proposals for a new SEN School and a Wellness Centre in Basildon.
“The aim is to create a space that supports children with additional needs while also providing valuable wellbeing facilities for the wider community.”
Mr Aldridge said a 4G pitch could be considered as part of the proposal, which would be available for use outside of school hours for local clubs to use.
He has organised a public consultation on April 23 at the Holiday Inn in Festival Leisure Park for parents and local residents to share their feedback.
Council leader Gavin Callaghan, commenting on Facebook, said the project was “much needed”.
The announcement follows a special educational needs and disabilities parents’ forum held by Mr Callaghan on Monday March 23.
He said his council are “determined” to build more SEND schools in Basildon in order to support the most vulnerable children across the borough. . . .
“Right now, there simply aren’t enough SEND school places, and mainstream schools need more support to do the job properly and expand.”
