A survey of councils uncovered a total of 48 pay-outs that were made to teaching staff between 2015 and 2017 - including one to a woman who was attacked with chairs and hit on the head. In several cases, the teachers’ injuries were so bad that councils had to shell out tens of thousands of pounds. One teacher in Bexley, London, was paid £22,485 in compensation for head injuries after a pupil kicked a door at her. Some teachers were attacked using classroom furniture and equipment, according to details released by councils. And many of the cases involved teachers trying to restrain violent pupils when they lost their temper, to stop them harming their peers.... It comes three years after Leeds teacher Ann Maguire, 61, was stabbed to death by one of her 15-year-old pupils as she taught a class. … Christopher McGovern, chairman of the Campaign for Real Education, said: ‘These compensation awards represent only the tip of iceberg in terms of classroom violence and stress caused to teachers by unacceptable pupil behaviour. … In total, 477 injuries from attacks on education staff were reported to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in 2016/16, compared to 385 in 2012/13. …
